10th Anniversary Event
Mikva Challenge 10th Anniversary Celebration & Tribute to Abner and Zoe Mikva
On March 12, 2009, we held our 10th Anniversary Celebration and Tribute to Abner and Zoe Mikva at the Hyatt Regency Hotel here in Chicago. Over 500 people attended the benefit honoring Judge Abner and Zoe Mikva for their commitment to public service. The event also recognized Mikva Challenge’s “action civics” model, which has been successfully developing the next generation of civic leaders, activists and policymakers for a decade.
Mikva Challenge’s 10th Anniversary Celebration was a smashing success, raising over $460,000 to support Mikva’s youth activism and leadership programs.

Highlights of the evening included speeches from William M. Daley; Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools; and Mikva alumni Eve Ewing, a CPS teacher, and Haamid Johnson, a future politician. Social Justice High School received Mikva Challenge’s 1st Annual Civic Leadership Award. President Obama even sent a televised message from the White House reflecting on his experiences working with Judge Mikva, and thanking the Mikvas for their commitment to young people, public service and education.
This once-in-a-decade event celebrated our founders, alumni and current students, introduced the work of the organization to new supporters, and laid out a vision of expanding our programs over the next ten years.
