Posted: 8/11/2009

Mikva Challenge’s Summer Government and Leadership Institute (SGLI) Interns completed their internships last week. As part of the group's wrap-up event, SGLI interns met with public officials at the Garfield Park Conservatory on Tuesday, August 4th and Thursday, August 6th. At each meeting, Mikva interns and elected officials discussed the three issues interns have been tackling this summer— teen pregnancy, violence, and education. Officials representing a number of different neighborhoods in Chicago attended the event, including:

  • Representative LaShawn Ford
  • Alderman Sharon Dixon
  • Alderman Scott Waguespack
  • Alderman Joe Moore
  • Alderman Tom Tunney
  • Alderman Rey Colon
  • Alderman Toni Preckwinkle
  • Alderman George Cardenas
  • Commissioner Tony Peraica
  • State Senator Heather Steans
  • Alderman Willie Cochran

Mikva's Summer Government and Leadership Institute Interns work 4 days a week in the offices of elected officials, and attend one full day workshop per week with Mikva staff to discuss issues affecting young people and their communities. These workshops are also designed to further develop SGLI interns' leadership, public speaking, critical thinking and social skills - all of which are useful to ensure success in college and their future careers.  See photo gallery for pictures of the event here.
