Campaign Training for Mikva Women
This past weekend, Mikva took a group of ten amazing women - all Mikva alumnae or graduating seniors - to Lansing, Michigan to participate in the first annual Michigan Go Run! campaign leadership program hosted by The White House Project, a New York-based nonprofit that aims to advance women's leadership through political office. All of these young women are serious about running for office one day, whether it be sitting on their local school boards or sitting in the Oval Office. Bringing their advanced Mikva leadership skills with them, our young women took part in intensive workshops led by WHP staff and women officeholders in Michigan. Workshop facilitators discussed campaign organization, how to balance a challenging political life with a personal life and took lessons from a documentary on Shirley Chisholm's '72 run for President.
Ciana Ashton, Mikva's Elections and Leadership Coordinator who accompanied the women on the trip, noted, "This training was really useful because it focused specifically on skill-building for running campaigns. These women are already great leaders in their schools and communities, and this training is helping them take a concrete next step on their road to elected office."
