Mikva Student Attends Historic Indictment Meeting

Posted: 7/19/2012

Mikva Fellow Jarquise McComb observed history last Thursday during a meeting of the Illinois House Select Committee on Discipline, when the 12-member committee voted 11-1 to recommend the indictment of Rep. Derrick Smith.

Smith, a West Side Democrat, allegedly accepted a $7,000 bribe and will be the first Ill. House representative expelled in over 100 years should the chamber vote to oust him.

Jarquise, who attends Philips Academy High School, currently interns at the office of House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), who chairs the Discipline Committee.

The last time a House member was expelled was in 1905.
